With Spring here and summer quickly approaching, we thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about why proper and regular grooming is so important to the health and well-being of your dog.
Regular brush outs of your dog play a critical roll in helping them properly regulate their body temperature, prevention of fleas & ticks, as well as helps to improve their overall happiness. A dogs coat helps both heat and cool them so removal of the undercoat is extremely important to helping them stay cool (or warm) during temperature changes. Not removing the undercoat can cause them to over heat; additionally, not removing the undercoat can also result in matting which can cause them to become cold in the areas of the mat because hair is pulled into a ball, leaving portions of their skin open and exposed. Mats are not only unsightly and make it tough to control their body temperature, but left for too long can break the exposed skin and create sores and skin irritations that are uncomfortable for your pup.
Nail trimming is perhaps one of the most important yet overlooked parts of pet care. Unkempt nails are not only loud and bad for your floors but they are also extremely uncomfortable for your furry pal! Long nails can result in a change in their gait or cause to walk on the sides of their feet, resulting
in potential damage to their joints and bones.
Ear cleaning is another often overlooked part of pet care--keeping your pups ears clear is key to their comfort. Many dog breeds have hair in their ear canals that needs to be removed or it leads to ear yeast, mites, and infections if the ears are not kept clean and able to “breathe”.
In short, pets rely on their humans to take care of them! Keeping your furry friend clean and trimmed helps to improve and maintain their happiness because they can focus on dog stuff, without the discomfort of extra fur, matting, or untrimmed nails.
